John Good 180 Years

Julie Good named new High Sheriff of East Riding of Yorkshire

Our non-executive director Julie Good, has been appointed High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The office of High Sheriff has existed for over a millennia and is one of the oldest secular offices under the crown.

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent, non-political Royal appointment for a single year. Supporting the Crown and the judiciary is a central element of the role and the High Sheriff gives active support and encouragement to the police and emergency services, probation and prison services and to other agencies involved in crime prevention, particularly among young people.

Julie took over the role following her Declaration of Office on the 4th April during a ceremony held at Hull’s Guildhall, which was attended by civic dignitaries and the outgoing High Sheriff, John Holtby.

Julie is believed to be only the third woman to have served as High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire. As well as her role as non-executive director of John Good & Sons, she is also a non-executive director of Beverley Building Society.

She said: “It is a huge honour to have been asked to serve as High Sheriff. 2012 is going to be a great year as we celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, and in November we have the election of Police and Crime Commissioners across the country. This is a major change in the way our police are directed giving the electorate more say in policing in our communities.”

Julie is looking forward to working with the Tribune Trust, which was set up by Humberside Police and the High Sheriffs. The Trust provides grants for community projects and initiatives when funding is not available from other sources.

“I have been very impressed by the work of the Tribune Trust since my first involvement last October,” said Julie. “I look forward to giving it my full support.”
High Sheriffs also play an increasingly active role in promoting the voluntary sectors within their communities. Julie wanted to focus on an area that affected mainly women has a special interest in domestic abuse.

“Domestic abuse crosses all demographics and all walks of life,” Julie continued. “One of the challenges for victims is the feeling of isolation and shame and so they are reluctant to report it and those who want to report it often don’t know where to go for help.

“Hopefully during my year of office I can increase awareness of the issues and in some small way make a difference, supporting the great work of teams from all the services across the county, to help the plight of the women, men and children who are victims of domestic abuse.

“I am sure I will find the role of High Sheriff both rewarding and fascinating.”
